CITY GUIDES TEXAS

BEST THINGS TO DO IN DALLAS, TEXAS WITH KIDS

There is so much to see in Dallas! It actually wasn’t a place that was on our US Bucket list however my husband had to come here for work and I’m always keen to take any travel opportunity! You happily spend a couple of days here and have plenty to see and do. In this guide, I’ll be sharing the best things to do in Dallas Texas. Not everything is specifically aimed at kids but it is all family friendly!

I feel it’s important to say. When I arrived here (without my husband but with our toddler) the area was described to me as “sketchy” and I was advised not to go out on my own at night. I feel that this is an accurate way to describe it. While I didn’t feel unsafe walking around on my own. There were sadly, a lot of homeless people in the city and many did try to approach me.

Don’t let this put you off but it is important to be cautious!

GETTING TO DALLAS, TEXAS

We flew into Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. All the main things to see are in Downtown Dallas, getting there was very easy. Just hop on a straightforward train from outside terminal A. The train takes just under an hour and only costs $3.

THE BEST THINGS TO DO IN DALLAS, TEXAS

VISIT PIONEER PLAZA

Pioneer Plaza really is a must-see place. I’d seen photos but they don’t really do it justice. I didn’t realise quite how many charging bulls there were going to be! They are also life-sized.

My three-year-old really loved it here, especially when Daddy lifted him up to ride on a charging bull!

RIDE THE M-LINE TROLLEY

This is an old-fashioned style tram. Not only is it a great way to get around the city, it’s also free which is amazing!

This is going to be at the top of any train-loving toddler bucket list.

This is a good way to get from Downtown to Uptown if you need to.

Strollers (pushchairs) need to be folded and stored in the front.

ENJOY THE MURALS AT DEEP ELLUM

This was one of my favourite things to do in Dallas! It’s a perfect activity for both adults and kids to enjoy as there are different styles to suit everyone’s taste.

The Deep Ellum mural project consists of 42 murals painted by Texan artists to rejuvenate the area. There are now over 100 murals to see as you wander between Commerce and Elm Streets. We really loved spotting them all and picking out our favourites!

RIDE THE TRACTOR OUTSIDE DALLAS FARMER’S MARKET

The Dallas farmers market is a great place to visit, if you can get your kids past the big red tractor at the front! This was the highlight of Freddie’s trip and he insisted on visiting it daily!

The shops and restaurants here are open 7 days a week. On weekends you can buy fresh produce from “The Shed” located just behind the main market.

Find out more about it on their website HERE.

VISIT FERRIS PLAZA AND UNION STATION

Ferris Plaza is small but very pretty. It also offers good views of Union Station and the Reunion Tower. Union Station is a beautiful building to see and possibly take a day trip from.

We took a day trip from Dallas to Stockyards in Fort Worth and I would highly recommend it!

READ OUR BLOG POST ON VISITING STOCKYARDS HERE

The Reunion Tower is another popular thing to do in Dallas. I decided against it as I really didnt think the views would be that amazing, but it’s something to consider. Adult tickets are $19, see more information and book here.

DISCOVER HISTORY AT DEALEY PLAZA

At Dealey Plaza, you’ll see lots of fountains and memorial statues. This is also known as the “Birthplace of Dallas.”

Just a short walk down the hill from Dealey Plaza, you can see an X on the road. This marks the spot where John F Kennedy was assassinated. This was really an activity for my husband but we like to do things for everyone when we travel!

Dealey Plaza

AT&T DISCOVERY DISTRICT

This is a really lovely area located in the heart of downtown Dallas. Here you’ll find with lots of restaurant options and also a large field which is perfect for picnicks. You’ll also see some immersive displays and installations which kids and grownups will both love to watch.

KLYDE WARREN PARK

I’m going to be honest, we were quite disappointed by this park. I’d read quite a few other blog posts that raved about Klyde Warren. One even described it as Dallas’ Central Park, I’m pretty sure the person who wrote that had never been to Central Park.

It’s pretty much just a field of dry grass with a cafe underneath a highway.

It did look like they were in the process of building a great children’s play area and splash pad. This should be a major improvement!

CROSS MARGARET HUNT HILL BRIDGE

Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge

The Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge was also recommended in quite a few blog posts. You can’t actually walk over the bridge. It was quite a lot of effort to get to so in my opinion, only really worth it if you have a car.

If you do decide to walk, don’t follow Google Maps (like we did!) it will take you over another very long bridge. The Trinity Skyline Trail is located next to the Margaret Hunt Hill bridge and you can walk over it!

Thank you so much for reading our post on things to do in Dallas, Texas with kids. I hope it has given you some inspiration on what to see and do while you’re there!
