GOOD TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
Entry: The cost to walk the City Walls is €35 for adults. €15 for ages 7-18 and free for children under 7. The entrance fee has rapidly increased in recent years due to the popularity of the walls. It is overpriced but the views are incredible and crowds were still lining up to pay for it.
I’d recommend buying the Dubrovnik City Pass. It also costs €35 but includes a few other attractions and public transport. You can purchase it online or from one of the tourist offices in Dubrovnik.
Accessibility: The walls are not accessible. There are multiple steps which are not suitable for a pushchair/ stroller. We used the entrance closest to the Old Town’s main entrance. There is a space there where you can leave your pushchair. I used a carrier for our 1-year-old and he practiced his walking some of the way. Our 4-year-old walked most of the way but needed a carry at the end.
Eating: There is a stall selling drinks and ice cream and two cafes along the walls. There is no shade so be sure to take enough water with you. We took a backpack with drinks and snacks. I’d recommend taking plenty of snacks and a treat for little ones!
TIPS FOR VISITING THE DUBROVNIK CITY WALLS WITH LITTLE KIDS
GET THERE EARLY
We arrived at the steps to the walls at 8:40 am, I wouldn’t say it was busy at that time but there were quite a few people already there. By 11 am people were queuing to get up the steps (see the photo below). With two little kids, we were slower getting around than some others. In some places, the walls are quite narrow and it was a bit like being headed like cattle. There are also big groups doing walking tours and they will push past you to keep up with their guide.
THINGS TO TAKE
Dubrovnik treated us to beautiful weather. If you’re lucky enough to get the same, you’ll want to take suncream and hats, there isn’t much shade on the walls. I forgot my sunglasses and regretted it. I mentioned earlier that there are a couple of places to buy food and drinks but they’re not the cheapest. You’ll definitely want to bring your own water.
Baby Jaxon had just started walking but only holding my hand. He loved walking along the walls but by the end, he was exhausted. I took this hip carrier for him and it was really useful. It’s lightweight and easy to pack and took the weight off my back. If you have a younger baby, you might want to bring something more substantial.
THE MARITIME MUSEUM
The Maritime Museum is located inside the wall walk and the entrance fee is included with the Dubrovnik City Pass. The museum is small but interesting and there is a children’s area upstairs. This is a great way to break up the walk for kids and give them a little rest.
GAME OF THRONES
My husband is a Game of Thrones fan, he mentioned it was filmed here to our 4-year-old, which unleashed a whole load of questions. This conversation kept him entertained for quite a long time, it was also challenging to explain the whole plot and characters to a 4-year-old. I’ll leave it up to you if you want to get into that!
Thank you for reading our guide to the Dubrovnik City Walls with little kids. I hope our tips have been useful to you and you enjoy your visit to Dubrovnik!
