Niksic is Montenegro’s second largest city but is relatively unexplored by tourists. It wasn’t a place I’d heard of before starting to plan our Montenegro with kids trip! So if you’re reading this guide, you may be wondering, where Niksic is located and if Niksic Montenegro is worth visiting.
We stopped off in Niksic with our kids when travelling from Lake Skadar to The Durmitor National Park and spent most of the day there. Montenegro is a wildly underrated country, but one that is becoming increasingly popular. We visited the main tourist destinations plus a few hidden gems as a family. Niksic is one of those hidden gems. In this guide, we’ll be discussing if Niksic, Montenegro is worth visiting. What to do in Niksic and what to expect from your visit there!

Where is Niksic Located?
Niksic is the second largest city in Montenegro. Niksic is located in the western part of Montenegro, situated about 34 miles northwest of the capital, Podgorica. It lies roughly half way between the popular Bay of Kotor area and the Durmitor National Park.
While it’s not as touristy as Kotor or Budva, its central location makes it a convenient and interesting place to explore on a Montenegro road trip.
Is Niksic, Montenegro Worth Visiting?
Overall, we had a great day in Niksic as a family. While it doesn’t have as much to do as places such as Tivat or the beauty of Lake Skadar, it is certanally a nice place to visit. Being less touristy, it is also more budget friendly which is great!
In our honest opinion, if you’re passing Nicksic, its well worth stopping here, however I wouldn’t go too far out of my way to visit!
The Best Things to do Things to do in Niksic as a Family
Here we’ll share the best Niksic attractions and things not to miss while you’re there. While we were visiting Niksic with kids, most of these activities (excluding the playground) are not specifically aimed at children, so you could enjoy them as a couple or even a solo traveller!
Stroll through Trg Slobde Square
In the centre of Niksic, there is a large square called Trg Slobode which has cafes and restaurants all around it. We stopped at a cafe for a drink before wandering through the square. My children loved looking at the fountain and large horse statue.

Visit City Park
If you’re looking for a free thing to do in Niksic with kids (or without them!), the city park is a lovely place for a walk. There is a good playground located in the park which was perfect for our kids to burn some energy.
There is also a forest called Trebjesa, in between the playground and forest was a popcorn stall, for €1 we had to get some. We walked through the forest for a while. The trail didn’t look like a loop so we turned back as we were starting to get hungry.

Enjoy a Delicious Lunch in Niksic
Where are the best restaurants in Niksic? You’ll find plenty of restaurant options in Niksic located around the main square. One of the great things about here is that it’s not a tourist destination so it was much cheaper than all the other places we visited.
We ate at Caffee bar Gakerija. The food took a long time to arrive. I don’t know if this is typical or if they forgot our order but it was delicious and this huge burger and chips (fries) cost just €5.50!

Try the Local Beer
If like beer and you’re wondering what to do in Nicksic, this one is a must! One of Montenegro’s most popular local beers is called Nikšićko. It is named after Niksic as it is the city where it’s produced!
Personally, I’m not a beer drinker but my husband can confirm, this is one of the best local experiences in Niksic, so make sure to try it.
Other Things to do in Niksic, Montenegro
There are a few other things to do in Niksic that we didnt do this time, however, I will still list them below:
