VISITING THE TARA CANYON IN MONTENEGRO
A MONTENEGRO – TRAVEL GUIDE
Some views are truly breathtaking. The view from the Tara Bridge down to The Tara River is one of those views. Located in the North of Montenegro along with the stunning Durmitor National Park, this area was well worth the drive to the countryside (even for me – a true city girl!). This post is all about visiting the Tara Canyon in Montenegro and what you need to know.
While the Kotor area is becoming increasingly popular with tourists, the North is still relatively unexplored. Exploring this area was a truly magical experience and one I would recommend adding to your bucket list.
We spent two amazing weeks exploring Montenegro as a family.

We visited Montenegro in April 2024. On our first day in North Montenegro, we woke up to snow! I thought seeing the Tara Bridge in the snow would be extra special, unfortunately as we drove down the mountain to it, the snow had turned to rain. Even in the rain, this was still well worth a visit although there is more to do here in the summer months. I’ll talk more about that below.
VISITING THE TARA CANYON IN MONTENEGRO
There is not much (if any) public transport in the North of Montenegro. We hired a car for our full time in Montenegro so we could explore properly and I would recommend you do this also. You could park for free by the Tara Cafe. We always search RentalCars.com for the best deal. On this trip we used Enterprise.
If you don’t want to do the hire car option, it is possible to visit as part of a day trip. I’ve linked two tour options below that you should consider.
Below are photos of the incredible Tara Bridge and the view of The Tara River. It was a gloomy day but look how blue the river still shines. It is even more stunning in person.
After walking the bridge, we stopped for a drink in the cafe. We had to sit inside as it was cold and wet but on a nice day, you’ll get a lovely view from the terrace.
There are also a few cabin-style huts that sell drinks, snacks and souvenirs on the other side of the canyon from the cafe.
We just spent a couple of hours here, if you’re visiting in the summer and like outdoorsy activities. There is a zipline that runs over the canyon. You can also do rafting. Neither of these things appealed to me, although my husband would have enjoyed them! Both are available to book from stands right by the canyon.
Thank you for reading our guide to visiting Tha Tara Canyon in Montenegro, we hope you have a wonderful trip!
