Montenegro with Kids: Is the Tara Canyon Worth Visiting?
Visiting the Tara Canyon, Montenegro, with kids is an incredible family adventure you won’t want to miss. Some views are truly breathtaking, and the Tara Canyon is one of those views.
On our recent trip, we walked across the iconic Đurđevića Tara Bridge and admired the stunning views of the Tara River and Tara Canyon below. Located in the North of Montenegro, along with the beautiful Durmitor National Park, this area was well worth the drive to the countryside (even for me – a true city girl!). It was also, surprisingly family-friendly.
While the Kotor area is becoming increasingly popular with tourists, the North of Montenegro is still relatively unexplored. Visiting this area was a truly magical experience and one I would recommend adding to your bucket list. If you’re visiting Montenegro with kids and wondering whether the Tara Canyon is worth the drive, this guide will show you why it absolutely is, plus how to make the most of your visit with little ones in tow.

When to Visit the Tara Canyon, Montenegro
We visited Montenegro in early April. On our first day in North Montenegro, we woke up to snow! I thought seeing the Tara Bridge in the snow would be extra special, unfortunately, as we drove down the mountain to it, the snow had turned to rain. Even in the rain, this was still well worth a visit, although there is more to do here in the summer months. I’ll talk more about that below.
The North of Montenegro will generally be colder than the south due to the high altitude, so be prepared with warmer layers if you visit here!
If you’re hoping for an adventure holiday and want to do rafting at the Tara Canyon, you should look to visit in the summer, which is peak season. While it says online you can raft from April to October, it was not open when we visited.
How to Get to Tara Canyon
There is not much (if any) public transport in the North of Montenegro. We hired a car for our full time in Montenegro so we could explore properly, and I would recommend you do this also. You could park for free by the Tara Cafe. We always search RentalCars.com for the best deal. On this trip, we used Enterprise.
We stayed in the small town of Zabljak, which is about 45-minute drive from the Tara Canyon. I would recommend staying in Zabljak as there are a few resteraunts, a large store and other family-friendly facilities.
If you don’t want to do the hire car option, it is possible to visit as part of a day trip. I’ve linked two tour options below that you should consider:
DURMITOR, TARA & OSTROG MONOSTRY DAY TRIP FROM KOTOR BAY
DURMITOR NATIONAL PARK AND TARA BRIDGE DAY TRIP FROM KOTOR
Personally, I would do one of these with young children. It would be a long day and a lot of driving time for them. However, it could be a good option for couples or families with older children.
Things to Do at Tara Canyon Montenegro as a Family
Below are all the things to do at and around The Tara Canyon, all of these are family-friendly unless I mention otherwise!
Walk Across the Đurđevića Tara Bridge
The iconic Đurđevića Tara Bridge is not to be missed, at 365 meters long, its concrete arches stretch across the canyon below.
Below are some photos of the incredible Tara River Canyon from the Tara Bridge. It was a gloomy day, but look how blue the Tara River still shines. It is even more stunning in person. The bridge is the best viewpoint for the canyon.
Make sure to keep a close eye on little kids here as they could easily try to climb the bridge railings.

Get a Drink at the Tara Caffe Bar
After walking the beautiful Đurđevića Tara Bridge, we stopped for a drink in the cafe overlooking the Tara Canyon. We had to sit inside as it was cold and wet, but on a nice day, you’ll get a lovely view from the terrace.
This was a great thing to do with the kids as our 4-year-old loved the thick hot chocolate!

Pick up a Souverneir
On the other side of the canyon from the cafe, there are a few cabin-style huts that sell drinks, snacks, and souvenirs.
Zipline Across the Tara Canyon
If you love adventure-style holidays, you might enjoy ziplining across Tara Canyon. Children two and above are allowed to zipline if accompanied by an adult. It looked like you purchased tickets for $20 a person from the kiosk by the canyon.
As I mentioned, it was closed when we visited, we could see the zipline from the bridge but I have not tried this personally.

Go Rafting in The Tara Canyon
This really is the place for adrenaline junkies. Again, this was closed when we visited, and our children were too young anyway. However, if you’re visiting the Tara Canyon with kids aged 6 or above, this is an option for you! This would be an amazing, unique experience if you’re brave enough!
