5 Fun Things to Do in Budva with Kids

Things to Do in Budva Montenegro with Kids

The Best Activities in Budva for Families

Montenegro is an underrated country filled with beauty, culture and history. Budva is no exception with its small but charming medieval old town. Unfortunately, it was raining during our visit to Budva, but despite the bad weather, we still found plenty to enjoy. In this guide, I’ll be sharing the best things to do in Budva with kids.

How Long To Spend in Budva with Kids

We passed through Budva en route from Tivat to Lake Skadar, and it was the perfect way to break up the journey. We had planned to spend a full day in Budva, but ended up spending half a day due to the weather.

If you have better weather than we did, you could easily fill a day or even two!

TIP: I’m usually a big fan of public transport, but the explore Montenegro properly, you really need a car. We always compare deals on RentalCars; this time we used Enterprise.

The 5 Best Things to Do in Budva, Montenegro with Kids

1. See the Views from the Citadel

The Citadel is one of the main things to do in Budva and is also one of the best attractions in Budva for families! We didn’t walk the city walls in Kotor as 1300 stairs whilst carrying a 1-year-old was too much for me! Instead, we decided to explore them here in Budva. It’s smaller but much more manageable.

Entry to the Citadel is €5 (cash only), which includes the city wall with great views, the library and a small museum. There is also a cafe/ restaurant which opens around lunchtime, with more amazing views. Unfortunately, the cafe wasn’t open at the time of our visit.

Kid Tip: The Citadel doesn’t have an accessible entrance, and there are steps inside. We carried our Joolz Aer+ (which I highly recommend for travel) pushchair/ stroller up the main steps, then folded it and left it with the ticket salesperson.

We really enjoyed visiting the Budva Citadel, definitely add this activity to your Budva with kids itinerary!

We’ve written a full guide to The Citadel. Read it here!

EXPLORING THE CITADEL IN BUDVA

2. Wander the Pretty Streets of the Old Town

Budva’s Old Town is a lovely place for families. It is small but charming. The cobbled streets are closed to cars, making them very safe for children to explore.

You’ll be able to see most of the Old Town within an hour.

3. Play on the Beach in Budva, a Perfect Thing to do with Kids

As you can see, the weather was pretty miserable most of our time in Budva (it generally rains quite a lot in Montenegro), so we didn’t get to play on the beach.

If you’re visiting in the summer months, the beach pictured (Plaža Ričardova Glava) is right next to the Old Town and would be a perfect place to relax.

It looked like a very family-friendly beach, our kids would have loved to explore!

4. Try the Local Food

We stopped at Cafe Beatrice Budva to get out of the rain. My boys couldn’t resist a second breakfast and tried pancakes and a local dish of eggs in tomato sauce.

I didn’t need a second huge breakfast, so later stopped at the Old Town Bakery for a treat. Of course, I ended up sharing this croissant, but it was so delicious! They had many sweet and savoury options to choose from.

5. Walk the Coastline on the Mogren Beach Footway

We had planned to stay longer in Budva and walk the Mogren Beach Footway. It starts just next to the beach Plaža Ričardova Glava (search Mogren Beach Footway on Google Maps for the exact location); however, when we got to the start of the trail, we were told it was closed. I don’t know if this is because of all the rain or because of the season (we visited in April). But this is definitely something you should consider!

Really sad we didnt get to do this as it would have been a great thing to experience in Budva with kids.
