TRAVEL GUIDE – TIVAT, MONTENEGRO

Tivat is a stunning city in Montenegro. It is very different to Kotor, Budva and Perest (which all have a similar vibe). Tivat is much more affluent, a real hidden gem as it’s surprisingly very affordable. This guide covers the best things to do in Tivat Montenegro as a family and will help you plan an unforgettable trip. From picturesque beaches to a hidden submarine, Tivat has something for everyone. Read on for the full details.

We visited Montenegro in April 2024 when our kids were 4 and 14 months old. It was the first stop in our two-week itinerary and we got treated to some beautiful weather.

TIPS FOR VISITING TIVAT, MONTENEGRO

Tivat is where one of Montenegro’s main airports is located, making it the perfect place to stay.

We stayed 3 nights in Tivat, we had one afternoon and a full day in Tivat and the other, we did a day trip to Kotor. Read all about that here! We also visited Budva on our way down to Lake Skadar.

If possible, stay an extra night in Tivat and also visit Perest. We didn’t go there but it does look beautiful. It might be possible to do Perest and Kotor in one day but we have made a conscious decision not to rush during this trip!

THINGS TO DO IN TIVAT MONTENEGRO AS A FAMILY

WALK ALONG THE WATERFRONT

This is a lovely walk, lined with palm trees, places to eat and drink on one side and the sea on the other. We had a drink and ice cream at Hotel Pine and it was just what we needed after our flight!

We also ate pizza at Al Posto Guisto which was nice!

The waterfront is a beautiful walk and it wasn’t too busy so our 4-year-old could run about. There is no railing along the edge so you do need to watch children don’t leap over the side!

SPLASH IN THE FOUNTAINS

If you walk from Pine towards Porto Montenegro, you’ll come to a beautiful area with luxury shops and also, lots of little fountains. The boys loved splashing in these and I liked looking in the shop windows.

PORTO MONTENEGRO

Continuing along the waterfront, you’ll come to Porto Montenegro. Here you’ll see many yaughts docked in the marina. we enjoyed looking at all the boats and picking out our future yacht!

EXPLORE A REAL SUBMARINE

This is such a hidden gem in Tivat, I hadn’t seen it on any other blog posts. We just happened to walk past it. Freddie (age 4) was absolutely overjoyed and we also found it very interesting.

The Cold War submarine is very well was very well preserved and kid-friendly as they could steer all the wheels and push all the buttons. Even the periscope still works!

There is also a small museum. Tickets are €7 for adults or €5 if you don’t include the museum. Our kids were free.

I’ve written a complete guide to the submarine here!

WALK TO DONJA LASTVA

There is not a lot in this town other than the church however it is a beautiful walk from Tivat. For the most part, you can walk by the water. There is just one short part, that you need to use the road as the shoreline isn’t suitable for a pushchair.

On this walk, we stopped at Ponta Caffe Restoran for a drink and tried a local breakfast ‘doughnuts’ and jam dish. This was lovely as our baby was napping and Freddie could play on the beach.

We walked as far as the St. Rock Church and turned back.

PLAY ON THE BEACH

On the way back from Donja Lastva, we stopped on the beach opposite Big Ben restaurant for a while. It looks like a man-made beach but it was absolutely stunning and it was so nice to relax and have family time here. All the beaches in Montenegro are pebbles so pack water shoes.

It was really beach weather and it started to rain so we ate a late lunch in Big Ben and the food was good!
