Whale watching in New York City might not be the first thing that comes to mind when planning your trip, but you can take a whale watching cruise from Manhattan itself! Just a short boat ride from Manhattan, you can spot humpback whales, dolphins, and more in the wild. Whether you’re a local or just visiting, a whale watching tour is one of the most exciting outdoor experiences NYC has to offer. In this guide, we’re sharing the best family-friendly options for whale watching, New York City style — including what to bring, when to go, and which tours are worth booking.
This is also a child-friendly experience; our two-year-old toddler came with us on this cruise and loved it! I will give some kid tips below.

What to Expect from Whale Watching in New York City & Our Review
The New York City whale watching cruise we took is run by Event Cruises NYC. It operates Sundays from April to October and departs from Pier 40, which is on the West Side of Manhattan.
Boarding begins at 8:30 am, and the cruise departs at 9 am. Your trip will last approximately 4 and a half hours, and the route varies depending on where you’re most likely to see whales that day.
You’ll board a double-decker boat, the top deck is open, meaning you’ll get the best panoramic views. Hopefully, you’ll see whales, but if not, you’re sure to be treated to amazing views of the Manhattan skyline and other iconic NYC landmarks, including the Statue of Liberty, close up!
Our whale watching cruise sailed out towards the Atlantic for about an hour. The boat then slowed and hovered for a while to look for whales before heading back towards Manhattan.
According to the website, you have a 97% chance of seeing whales, although sightings aren’t guaranteed. Of course, the whales are wild animals, so they won’t show up on demand.
Unfortunately, we didnt see any whales during our trip, but we did see lots of dolphins, which were amazing!

Booking the Best Whale Watching Tour from NYC
We did our Whale Watching Cruise through Event Cruise NYC, and had such an amazing time. Even though we didnt see any whales, it was fun for the whole family!
Tickets need to be booked online in advance. I always recommend booking through a provider such as Get Your Guide, as they offer free cancellation. If it is raining, you could move your cruise to another day!
Tickets cost $95 for adults, $55 for kids. Sometimes they run promotions, so it’s worth double-checking on their website.

When is the Best Time For Whale Watching in NYC?
The best time for whale watching in New York City is generally from May to November, with the peak season being July to September. This is when whales migrate through the area, and you are most likely to see them.

What to Bring on a Whale Watching Tour
You’ll be on the boat for approximately 4 hours, so make sure to pack everything you need! We did this boat cruise on a hot day, so the breeze was perfect; however, you should pack layers just in case. The wind can get chilly!
Food is available to purchase on board, but you should also bring what you need with you. And plenty of water.
I would also recommend bringing binoculars and a good camera if you have one.
Tips for Families Whale Watching in New York City
If you’re wondering if this NYC Whale watching cruise is family-friendly, I’m pleased to say it is! Our two-year-old joined us on this tour, and he loved it.
4 hours is quite a long time for kids to sit, so be sure to pack some games or books to entertain them. I’d also highly recommend children’s binoculars and a kids’ camera so they can enjoy the experience properly.
As always, pack plenty of extra food and drinks for them!

Overall, we had so much fun whale watching in New York City, and I would recommend this cruise. Although it is important to remember that you may not see whales. I think you’d have to be very lucky to see one close-up.
