We visited Montenegro in April 2024 when our kids were 4 and 14 months old. It was the first stop in our two-week itinerary, and we got treated to some beautiful weather.

Is it Worth Visiting Tivat, Montenegro with Kids?
I’m always honest on this blog. We loved Tivat and would say it is absolutely worth visiting Tivat, Montenegro, with kids or even without them!
EasyJet has recently started flying from London directly to Tivat, so it is an easy flight, and Tivat Centre is only a short drive from the airport.
Furthermore, it has a really luxurious feel, without the luxury price tag, which is perfect for families.
It’s a beautiful place to explore on its own, and there’s the option to add on days for day trips to places near Tivat, such as Kotor, if you wish.

How Long Do You Need in Tivat, Montenegro with Kids
We stayed 3 nights in Tivat, we had one afternoon and a full day in Tivat and the other day, we did a day trip to Kotor. Read all about that here! We also visited Budva on our way down to Lake Skadar. (Full guides are both linked!)
If possible, stay an extra night in Tivat and also visit Perest. We didn’t go there, but it does look beautiful. It might be possible to do Perest and Kotor in one day, but we have made a conscious decision not to rush during this trip!

Where to Stay in Tivat with Kids
Near the waterfront is the ideal location to stay in Tivat. I have a few accomodation reccomendations below.
If you are visiting Tivat on a budget, Apartman Vuk is very affordable, working out at around £60 per night! It is located slightly away from the waterfront, a short but uphill walk from the main town, but it has free parking and great views.
For a mid-range budget, Porto Montenegro Residences offer luxury-looking suites that are located right on the waterfront of Porto Montenegro and would be a perfect base for families exploring Tivat and the Bay of Kotor area.
Finally, if you’re looking for a luxury family stay in Tivat, Regent Porto Montenegro is for you. This beautiful building has impressive indoor and outdoor pools and a dedicated children’s pool, plus four restaurants on site!
Best Things to Do in Tivat, Montenegro as a Family
Looking for things to do in Tivat, Montenegro with kids? Here are our favourite family-friendly spots and activities.
Walk Along the Waterfront
This is a great, family-friendly thing to do in Tivat. Tivat’s waterfront is a lovely walk, lined with palm trees, places to eat and drink on one side and the sea on the other. We had a drink and ice cream at Hotel Pine, and it was just what we needed after our flight!

APEROL SPRITZ WITH A VIEW AT PINE HOTEL
We also ate pizza at Al Posto Guisto, which was good food and had a view over the sea.
The waterfront is a beautiful walk, and it wasn’t too busy, so our 4-year-old could run about. There is no railing along the edge, so you do need to watch children don’t leap over the side!

Splash in the Fountains
If you walk from Pine towards Porto Montenegro, you’ll come to a beautiful area with luxury shops and also, lots of little fountains. The boys loved splashing in these, and I liked looking in the shop windows. This is a great free thing to do in Tivat with kids, especially if you’re visiting in summer and they need to cool off.

SPLASHING IN THE FOUNTAINS
Admire Porto Montenegro
Continuing along the waterfront, you’ll come to Porto Montenegro. This is another beautiful place to see in Tivat. There are many yachts docked in the marina. We enjoyed looking at all the boats and picking out our future yacht!

Explore Tivat’s Submarine: The Best Thing to Do with the Kids
Discovering the Tivat Submarine and Naval Heritage Collection Museum was such a win, as I hadn’t seen it mentioned in any other blog posts. It is now disused, so you can go inside and see what it is like inside a real submarine. Read our full guide to Tivat’s submarine with kids here.
It is such a hidden gem in Tivat and one of the best things to do with children. We just happened to walk past it. Freddie (age 4) was absolutely overjoyed, and we also found it very interesting.

TIVATS SUBMARINE
The Cold War submarine is very well was very well preserved and kid-friendly, as they could steer all the wheels and push all the buttons. Even the periscope still works!
There is also a small museum. Tickets are €7 for adults or €5 if you don’t include the museum. Our kids were free.
I’ve written a complete guide to the Tivat submarine here!

Walk to Donja Lastva
There is not much in Donja Lastva other than the church; however, it is a beautiful walk from Tivat. For the most part, you can walk by the water. There is just one short part where you may need to use the road as the shoreline isn’t suitable for a pushchair.

WALKING TO LA DONJA LASTVA FROM TIVAT
On this walk, we stopped at Ponta Caffe Restoran for a drink and tried a local breakfast, a ‘doughnuts’ and jam dish. This was lovely as our baby was napping and Freddie could play on the beach.
We walked as far as the St. Rock Church and turned back. We found this to be a relaxing, family-friendly Tivat activity!

Play on Tivat’s Beach
On the way back from Donja Lastva, we stopped on the beach opposite the Big Ben restaurant for a while. It looks like a man-made beach, but it was absolutely stunning, and it was so nice to relax and have family time here. All the beaches in Montenegro are pebbly, so pack water shoes for kids.

ENJOYING TIVAT’S BEACHES
It wasn’t really beach weather, and it started to rain, so we ran across to Big Ben for a late lunch, and the food was good!
If you have better weather than us, this is a family-friendly Tivat Montenegro beach with calm, shallow water by the shore and mountain views in the background. These are some of my favourite photos and memories from our trip!

Take a Day Trip
We had such an amazing time in Tivat, and I’m glad we picked it as our base, but there are lots of other great towns to explore along the Bay of Kotor area. We did a day trip to Kotor and also to explore Budva. We enjoyed both those locations, and you can read more about them in the full guides I’ve linked.
Some other options for easy day trips from Tivat include Perast and Herceg Novi, both of which I wish we had been able to visit.
Where to Eat in Tivat as a Family
The waterfront in Tivat is lined with resteraunts. A couple which we tried and loved include:
- Al Posto Guisto – for pizza
- Hotel Pine – for drinks and ice creams
- Ponta Caffe Restoran – for local food
- Big Ben Restaurant – for a wide range of foods
