A MONTENEGRO TRAVEL GUIDE

Niksic is Montenegro’s second largest city but is relatively unexplored. We stopped off here when travelling from Lake Skadar to The Durmitor National Park. In this guide, we’ll be discussing if Niksic Montenegro is worth visiting, including photos of this hidden gem.

We spent the best two weeks exploring Montenegro as a family.

Montenegro is a wildly underrated country, but one that is becoming increasingly popular. We visited the main tourist destinations plus a few hidden gems. Niksic is one of those hidden gems.

Although it is Montenegro’s second largest city, it is small. You can easily explore here in a day and it was the perfect stopping point to break up our journey.

A DAY IN NIKSIC MONTENEGRO

There is a large square called Trg Slobode which has cafes and restaurants all around it. We stopped at a cafe for a drink before wandering through the square.

The city park has a good playground which was perfect for our kids to burn some energy. There is also a forest called Trebjesa, in between the playground and forest was a popcorn stall, for €1 we had to get some. We walked through the forest for a while. The trail didn’t look like a loop so we turned back as we were starting to get hungry.

There are plenty of restaurant options in Niksic. One of the great things about here is that it’s not a tourist destination so it was much cheaper than all the other places we visited. We ate at Caffee bar Gakerija. The food took a long time to arrive. I don’t know if this is typical or if they forgot our order but it was delicious and this huge burger cost just €5.50!

Other things to see/do include Emporor’s Bridge, Bedem Fortress and The King Nikola Palace.

FUN FACT: one of Montenegro’s most popular local beers is called Nikšićko. Named after the city as that’s where it’s produced.

So is Niksic Montenegro worth visiting? While I probably wouldn’t recommend making a special trip here, it’s worth stopping if you’re passing close by.

We absolutely loved our trip to Montenegro.
