Walking the Dubrovnik city walls is one of the most iconic things to do in Croatia, but is it worth doing with kids or even toddlers? In this family-friendly guide, I’ll share everything we learned: how long the Dubrovnik walls walk takes, the cost, whether it’s stroller-friendly, and practical tips for visiting the city walls with children.
We visited Dubrovnik in April 2024, and our boys were 4 years old and 14 months old at the time of our visit. So, one young child and an almost-toddler!

Useful Information to Know Before You Walk the Dubrovnik City Walls
Dubrovnik City Walls Cost & Tickets
The cost to walk the City Walls is €35 for adults. €15 for ages 7-18 and free for children under 7. The entrance fee has rapidly increased in recent years due to the popularity of the walls. It is overpriced, but the views are incredible, and crowds were still lining up to pay for it.
I’d recommend buying the Dubrovnik City Pass. It also costs €35 but includes a few other attractions and public transport. You can purchase it online or from one of the tourist offices in Dubrovnik.
Are the Walls Stroller-Friendly?
The walls are not accessible for strollers (pushchairs). There are multiple steps which are not suitable for a pushchair/ stroller. We used the entrance closest to the Old Town’s main entrance. There is a space there where you can leave your stroller. I used a carrier for our 1-year-old, and he practised his walking some of the way. Our 4-year-old walked most of the way but needed a carry at the end.

Is There Anywhere to Eat?
There is a stall selling drinks and ice cream, and two cafes along the walls. There is no shade, so be sure to take enough water with you. We took a backpack with drinks and snacks. I’d recommend taking plenty of snacks and a treat for little ones!
How Long Does it Take to Walk the Dubrovnik City Walls?
It took us just around two and a half hours to walk the Dubrovnik city walls with our kids. This included stopping at the Dubrovnik Maritime Museum (which is also included in the Dubrovnik City Pass). As we had a 4-year-old and a baby who is just leari=nig to walk, our pace was slower than average!
Are the Dubrovnik Walls Worth It?
In my honest opinion, walking the Dubrovnik City Walls is an overpriced activity! However, it is a bucket list experience, and I am glad we did it. Our whole family enjoyed it, and it is now a beautiful family memory.
As it is so popular, they keep increasing the prices. As long as people are still paying it, they will keep increasing!
Tips for Walking the Dubrovnik City Walls with Kids
Get There Early
The best time to walk the Dubrovnik City walls is first thing in the morning. The walls open at 8 am, buy your tickets online i advance as lots of the shops dont open until 9. We arrived at the steps to the walls at 8:40 am. I wouldn’t say it was busy at that time, but there were quite a few people already there. By 11 am, people were queuing to get up the steps (see the photo below).
With two little kids, we were slower getting around than some others. In some places, the walls are quite narrow, and it was a bit like being herded like cattle. There are also big groups doing walking tours, and they will push past you to keep up with their guide. It is a more relaxed, family-friendly experience if you beat the rush.

Pack All Your Essentials
Dubrovnik treated us to beautiful weather on the day we walked the walls. If you’re lucky enough to get the same, you’ll want to take suncream and hats, as there isn’t much shade on the walls. I forgot my sunglasses and regretted it. I mentioned earlier that there are a couple of places to buy food and drinks, but they’re not the cheapest. You’ll definitely want to bring your own water.
Our baby had just started walking, but only when holding hands. He loved walking along the walls, but by the end, he was exhausted. I took this hip carrier for him, and it was really useful. This one is lightweight and easy to pack, and it took the weight off my back. If you have a younger baby, you might want to bring something more substantial.

Dont Miss the Maritime Museum
Dubrovnik’s Maritime Museum is located inside the city walls, and the entrance fee is included with the Dubrovnik City Pass. The museum is small but interesting. There is a children’s area upstairs. This is a great way to break up the walk for kids and give them a little break from walking.

Discuss or Avoid Game of Thrones
My husband is a Game of Thrones fan; he mentioned it was filmed here to our 4-year-old, which unleashed a whole load of questions. This conversation kept him entertained for quite a long time, but it was also challenging to explain the whole plot and characters to a 4-year-old. I’ll leave it up to you if you want to get into that!
