I’m a mum of two little boys, and over the past few years I’ve made a conscious effort to make healthier, more sustainable choices for our family. It started with paying closer attention to the foods we eat and gradually extended to the products we use every day around our home.

We also love to travel, and seeing so many incredible places around the world has made me realise how important it is to look after our planet. For me, choosing eco-friendly products goes hand in hand with trying to live a little more consciously, making simple swaps that are better for the environment and actually work.

I only recommend products I’ve used myself, and I’ll keep this guide updated as I discover new favourites. My aim isn’t to create a perfectly eco-friendly home overnight; it’s to find practical, sustainable swaps that fit into busy family life. I’m researching and testing eco-friendly products, so you don’t have to!

Eco-friendly products are designed to reduce their impact on the environment throughout their lifecycle. This might mean they’re made from recycled or renewable materials, come in plastic-free or refillable packaging, are biodegradable, or are manufactured in a way that uses fewer natural resources.

Many eco brands focus on natural or fewer chemical ingredients, which is not only better for the planet, but also for our bodies.

Even making one or two simple swaps can help reduce single-use plastic, minimise waste and create a more sustainable home over time.

So, if you’re looking to switch to more environmentally conscious products, here’s my list of easy swaps to make. These are all products we currently use in our home. As I continue to try new brands, I will keep this guide updated, or read my other product reviews and sustainable living tips here.

Eco-Friendly Products for Your Kitchen

The kitchen is a great place to start when making more sustainable swaps around your home. It’s one of the most-used rooms in the house, and many everyday items can easily be replaced with eco-friendly alternatives without changing your daily routine.

1. Foaming Hand Soap – The Green Co.

2. Dishwasher Tablets – Smol

Smol dishwasher tablets have become a staple in our kitchen. They clean our dishes brilliantly, even on shorter cycles. I haven’t felt the need to switch back to supermarket brands, and while I would be open to trying other brands, I haven’t felt the need to.

The tablets dissolve during the wash cycle, arrive through the post, and are excellent value for money. For me, they’re one of the easiest sustainable household products to recommend because they work just as well as traditional dishwasher tablets while helping to reduce unnecessary plastic packaging.

3. Bamboo Washing Up Brush – Amazon

A bamboo washing up brush is one of those small changes that can make a big difference over time. Unlike traditional plastic washing up brushes or sponges, bamboo is a fast-growing, renewable material, making it a more environmentally friendly alternative.

I find mine works really well for everyday washing up, although I occasionally reach for a tougher scrubber if I have a particularly stubborn baking tray or pan to clean. For everyday dishes, though, it’s become an easy eco-friendly swap that I wouldn’t go back from.

I chose a long handle brush that you can replace the head on as needed, and it has worked well for me.

I got mine from Amazon; there are a lot of options to choose from, but see the one I purchased here, which is a brush and 3 heads for about £12. Replacement brush heads are also available on Amazon and cost about £8 for a pack of 4.

4. Glass Food Storage Containers – Amazon

I won’t lie, I do still have some plastic food storage, but I’m gradually switching them out for glass storage containers. Glass doesn’t absorb food stains or odours in the same way plastic can, and it’s also fully recyclable.

I particularly like containers with airtight lids because they’re incredibly versatile. I can cook or reheat food in the oven (without the lid), then simply add the lid and store leftovers in the fridge or freezer. It saves washing up and means I’m using fewer disposable food storage products.

I have had these for years now, so my exact ones are no longer available, but these glass food storage tubs from Amazon are very similar.

5. Swedish Dishcloth – Amazon

Swedish dishcloths are an eco-friendly alternative to traditional disposable cleaning cloths. Unlike the classic blue cleaning cloths, they’re plastic-free and designed to be reused again and again. I also try to use these in place of disposable kitchen roll.

When they need freshening up, I simply pop them in the washing machine before using them again. They last much longer than disposable cloths, stay fresher between uses and help reduce household waste, making them another of my favourite environmentally friendly household products.

6. Washing Up Liquid – Smol

Another Smol product I’ve been really happy with is their washing up liquid. Instead of buying a new plastic bottle every time, the liquid arrives in a recyclable carton that you simply pour into a refillable dispenser.

It lathers really well, smells lovely and cleans everything from everyday plates to greasy pans without any issues. It’s an easy sustainable swap that quickly becomes part of your normal routine.

Unfortunately, the washing up liquid isn’t included in Smol’s essentials bundle, but you can add it on for just £2 extra.

7. Reusable Water Bottles – Thermos

If you’re a parent, you’ll probably understand the never-ending cycle of replacing children’s water bottles! They leak, they get mouldy, or they simply don’t last very long.

I actually bought our first Thermos bottle to carry milk for one of my sons while we were travelling, but it quickly became my favourite reusable water bottle for everyday use. Our original bottle lasted around four years before we sadly lost it, and throughout that time it never leaked once.

Another feature I love is that you can buy replacement straws instead of replacing the entire bottle if one becomes worn. It’s a simple way to reduce waste while investing in a product that’s built to last. For me, it’s one of the best eco-friendly products for your home because it’s just as useful on the school run as it is on family holidays.

This is the style of bottle I have for my kids. There are lots of designs for both boys and girls to choose from. They start from around £5, which may seem like a lot for a water bottle, but better to buy one good one than lots of ones that need replacing quickly. If you need a replacement straw, try these.

Environmentally-Friendly Laundry Products

Laundry is another easy place to make more sustainable swaps, and I’ve been pleased to find environmentally friendly products that work just as well as the ones I used to use.

8. Laundry Pods – Smol

Smol’s laundry pods have become my go-to for everyday washing. The pods use a water-soluble PVA film that dissolves during the wash cycle, making them quick, convenient and easy to use.

Because we live in a very hard water area, I usually use two pods for larger loads to get the best results, but I’ve always been impressed with how well they clean our clothes.

One of the biggest reasons I’ve continued using Smol is that they’ve worked well for our family. My eldest son has bad eczema, and we’ve found these pods suit his skin really well, which gives me confidence using them for all of our washing.

9. Stain Remover – Smol

Another eco-friendly product I am a big fan of is Smol’s stain remover. With two young boys, we’re constantly dealing with muddy clothes, food stains and the occasional mystery mark, so it gets plenty of use!

Thankfully, it’s proved just as effective as the stain removers I’ve used in the past and doesn’t use any harsh chemicals. The reusable spray bottle is topped up using refills delivered in recyclable cartons, making it another simple swap that’s helped us reduce plastic waste at home.

10. Glass Cleaner – The Green Co.

11. Toilet Roll – Who Gives a Crap

Switching to bamboo toilet paper was one sustainable swap I wasn’t sure about at first, but it’s honestly just as soft and comfortable as the supermarket brands we’ve used in the past.

Bamboo is a fast-growing, renewable resource, making it a more sustainable alternative to traditional toilet paper. I decided to switch to Who Gives a Crap Bamboo toilet paper as, although you need to buy larger boxes, I actually find the price works out very similar to regular supermarket toilet roll, so it’s an easy swap that doesn’t really cost any more.

12. Bamboo Toothbrushes – Amazon

Bamboo toothbrushes are one of the simplest eco-friendly products you can introduce into your home. They’re affordable, widely available and don’t require you to change your daily routine at all.

I find the bristles slightly softer than traditional plastic toothbrushes, but they still clean effectively. For children especially, I like buying multi-packs with different coloured brushes so everyone knows which toothbrush belongs to them.

A pack of 12 bamboo toothbrushes costs just £12.99, making them very affordable.

If you prefer an electric toothbrush, I’ve heard great things about the SURI electric toothbrush. It’s plastic-free with biodegradable replacement heads. I haven’t tried this personally yet, though.

13. Hard Water Stain Remover – Homemade

Living in one of the UK’s hardest water areas means limescale and watermarks are a constant battle in our bathroom.

After trying many shop-bought products, I’ve actually had the best results using a simple homemade mixture. I rub a wedge of lemon dipped in bicarbonate of soda over stubborn stains before spraying the area with white vinegar and leaving it to work.

I won’t pretend it’s completely effortless. As our water is so hard, initially it took a couple of applications and some serious elbow grease. However, I’ve found it more effective than many of the commercial cleaners I’ve tried, and it’s an inexpensive, low-waste alternative.

14. Deodorant – Wild

Although deodorant isn’t technically a household product, it’s one of my favourite sustainable swaps and something I use every single day.

15. Bathroom Cleaning Spray – Smol

Smol’s bathroom cleaning spray uses another simple refill system. Instead of buying a brand-new plastic bottle each time, many of which are largely filled with water. You simply dissolve one of the cleaning tablets in water inside a reusable spray bottle.

I’ve found it works really well on sinks, bathroom surfaces and around the bath, making everyday cleaning quick and easy. It’s another sustainable swap that’s helped us reduce the number of disposable cleaning bottles we buy each year.
