The Best Family-Friendly Thing to do in Tivat Montenegro
Montenegro is such an underrated country, from picturesque shorelines to historic old towns, it has something for all the family. We were lucky enough to spend two weeks exploring the wonders of Montenegro as a family and came across a real hidden gem in Tivat Montenegro. A decommissioned submarine! The Heroj P-821 submarine.
I read multiple blog posts about visiting Tivat, Montenegro and while some mentioned the Maritime Heritage Museum of Tivat, none talked about the Tivat submarine. We happened to stumble upon it during a walk slightly off the beaten path and it was such an interesting experience for all the family.

Good to Know Before You Visit the Tivat Submarine
Getting There: The submarine is part of the Maritime Heritage Museum Tivat, located just outside the main area of Tivat (a 5-minute walk from Porto Montenegro). You can find it by searching on Google Maps.
Entry: Tickets are €7 for the museum and submarine or €5 for just the submarine and children under 6 go free. The opening times seem to vary throughout the seasons.
Accessibility: There are quite a few steps up to both the museum and the submarine. We always take our lightweight Joolz Aer+ pushchair/ stroller when we travel. So it wasn’t too heavy to carry up to the museum. We left it in the museum while we explored the submarine.
The Tivat Submarine: Visiting a Hidden Gem in Montenegro
Below is all the information you need to know about visiting the Naval Maritime Heritage Museum in Tivat and the Tivat Submarine Heroj P-821. This is a really unusual thing to do in Montenegro and one of the highlights of our family trip there.
The Maritime Heritage Museum Tivat
The Maritme Heritage Museum (also called Naval Heritage Collection Museum) is small but quite interesting. It has lots of historical naval artefacts that my husband and son really enjoyed seeing. We enjoyed looking around, but overall, it wasn’t as interesting as the actual submarine!
Tip: it rains such a lot in Montenegro. It’s well worth the €2 admission fee to avoid a shower.

The Tivat Submarine
There are two submarines on display but only one (the larger one) is open to the public. The ticket included a guided tour of this P-821 Heroj submarine, and our guide told us so much interesting information, including what the different parts were and machines all did.

The submarine is fantastic for kids as they’re allowed to turn all the wheels and press all the buttons. The submarine’s periscope is still working and you can view the beach from it! Even though the submarine is large (10 meters long and 5 meters wide), it is not very spacious inside, so you do have to watch your step.
My husband is a history lover so of course this was right up his street. My four-year-old enjoyed it all so much, that he went around twice! Surprisingly, even I found it interesting. So we would definitely recommend adding this experience to your Montenegro itinerary.
