Why You Don’t Need Many Maternity Clothes

You’re pregnancy will last around 9 months, but you’ll likely be able to fit into your pre-pregnancy clothes for the first few months.

My advice would be to buy yourself a small pregnancy capsule wardrobe of items you love and can wear on repeat. You can still use your current accessories to style outfits in different ways.

Tips for Buying Your Pregnancy Clothes

Here are a few tips before you start buying your maternity wardrobe:

  • Don’t shop too soon! With my first pregnancy, I was very excited and started buying as soon as I found out. By the time my bump had grown, some of the items already didn’t fit as my chest had grown as well. Allow your body to start changing before you shop.
  • You might not need specific maternity clothing. If you have some items of baggy clothing, they might fit through the majority, if not all, of your pregnancy. Using a belt above the bump rather than around the waist can elevate a simple outfit.
  • Dont forget underwear. Comfortable bras are a must. Towards the end of my pregnancy, I wore a sports bra at night, and I switched to nursing bras as they offer more support.
  • Choose quality over quantity. It’s better to have a few key pieces you really love and feel good in than lots of cheap pieces that dont really work for you. With maternity clothes, it is possible to find nice quality pieces that are also affordable!
  • Take advantage of sales and promotions. High street brands are always running sales and promotions, be sure to take advantage of these offers!
  • Consider Secondhand. Charity/thrift stores can be a great source for maternity clothing brands, as people often haven’t worn things much before donating, so you can pick up pieces that are like new! Vinted has also really taken off; it’s easy to filter exactly what you’re looking for!
  • Remember, it takes a while for your body to return to normal. Some pregnancy clothes are designed with post-partum life in mind. For example, dresses with concealed openings for breastfeeding.

Best Maternity Clothing Brands for Affordable Pregnancy Clothes

H&M

You’ve most likely shopped in H&M before. They have a whole maternity range called MAMA. You can expect the same affordable style and quality as their regular range!

They offer a wide range of maternity clothes, from basic, capsule wardrobe essentials, to pretty, flattering dresses and often have sales or discount codes online.

Dresses from SHEIN & PinkBlush Maternity

SHEIN

SHEIN is well known for offering trendy pieces at bargain prices. Their maternity range is no different. I’m not a massive fan of SHEIN in general as the quality is pretty hit-and-miss (usually miss), but I have had a few great pieces from there, and I actually found a few great pieces for my maternity wardrobe!

SHEIN was perfect for cheap maternity swimsuits; I knew I would only wear them a couple of times on vacation. Also, maternity tights can be so expensive. I got most of mine from SHEIN, and they worked so well for me!

Shopping Tip: I found that pieces come up small. I ordered mainly size small (which is my usual size). I had to return a couple of things because at 20 weeks, they were already too tight. I would recommend going up one or even two sizes.

PINKBLUSH MATERNITY

My second baby was born in the USA (my first in England) an American brand I loved for buying affordable maternity clothes online was PinkBlush. Everything I ordered was true to size and fit well, and the clothes are also of really nice quality.

While PinkBlush are more expensive than SHEIN, in my opinion, you can tell the quality difference.

PinkBlush does ship internationally; however, the shipping fees for this are quite high!

ASOS

Again, you’ve probably heard of and likely already shopped with ASOS. I like ASOS as they have a large selection and also a lot of occasionwear options if you have an event while pregnant.

Shopping Tip: Check out the huge sale section. I picked up a beautiful occasion dress for a wedding in the sale for about £25 last time I was pregnant!

BOOHOO

I had never shopped at BooHoo before I was pregnant; however, for my first pregnancy, most of my maternity wardrobe came from BOOHOO. They offer a wide range of styles at really affordable prices.

Personally, I think they have many more summer options than they do winter, so I didn’t shop there the second time around. Definitely still worth a look though!

Vinted

I’ve updated this post to include Vinted. This is an online app for people to buy and sell fashion items. It wasn’t around during my pregnancies, but has really taken off recently. If I were to shop for maternity clothes now, I would definitely use it!

I usually take a quality over quantity approach to fashion, but, did favour fast fashion brands during pregnancy as I wasn’t going to get much wear out of them. Now, I would search more premium brands such as Serapine Maternity on Vinted to get a quality piece at a fraction of the price!

Thank you for reading my guide about the best affordable maternity clothing brands. I hope you find some pieces you love for your maternity capsule wardrobe!
