TIPS FOR FLYING WITH A TODDLER

Flying with a little one can be daunting, especially when it’s a long haul. How are you going to keep your toddler entertained on a long flight?

I packed an activity pack to keep him busy! The video below shows most of what I packed; I also included his headphones, his are old now but I’ve linked some similar ones. Keep reading for tips on making the best activity pack for your toddler!

TIPS FOR BUILDING YOUR ACTIVITY PACK

New toys always keep them entertained the longest. This is an unfortunate but true fact! This doesn’t mean you have to spend a huge amount of money.

A lot of things I put in his activity pack were very inexpensive, I got a lot from the bullseye section at Target. If you live near a Dollar Tree or similar, this is a great place to start. In England, I also love The Works.

When putting together your activity pack, think about the things your child likes the most. For example, my son loves to build, do puzzles and read.

With this in mind, I chose things I knew he would love. These MAGNETIC SHAPES were his absolute favourite. They were the most expensive thing I put in his pack (on promotion for $25) but I was confident he would love them and I was right.

One of his other favourite things was the mini puzzle blocks. They were only $1 in Target (I actually went back for a second pack as we lost a few in England!) If you can’t find them in Target, I’ve linked similar HERE.

I know he likes to look and find book books so I got a couple of new ones. However, I wished I’d also packed a couple of new storybooks.

He doesn’t like to colour, I did pack a small coloured book and pencils in this kit but next time, I would leave them out! For him, a simple notebook and pens are better. We used the pages to “build” (he bulldozed the page and I drew) a town for his mini trucks. The dinosaurs also came off the tops of the pens so we could use them to create a dino world.

OTHER TIPS KEEP YOUR TODDLER ENTERTAINED ON A LONG FLIGHT

Make a Big Fuss of Their Seat – if you tell a toddler they can’t get out of their seat, they’ll immediately want to! Instead, make a big fuss of their seat and how amazing it is that they have their own window etc. Put their things in the seat pocket, anything to make it seem exciting!

Screen Time – if your kid likes screen time, great! Just remember to pack headphones for them. If you don’t usually allow screen time, you’d say it’s a very special vacation treat! I usually like to download a couple of things before we fly in case the plane options aren’t very good.

Snacks – take plenty of snacks. On a long flight, I usually do a full picnic for him as plane food (if it’s included) can be very hit-and-miss!
