THE BEST BOAT TOUR ON LAKE SKADAR, MONTENEGRO

Lake Skadar boat tour

MONTENEGRO TRAVEL GUIDE

Lake Skadar or The Shkodra Lake is one of the real wonders of Montenegro and a place a lot of people skip. The boat trip we did was one of the highlights of our trip and I would highly recommend it. There are many different options for boat tours, so how do you know which is the best boat tour on Lake Skadar? I’m going to tell you, so read on!

This tour company was recommended to us by our AirBnB host. They have 8 tours available on Trip Advisor, ranging from 1 – 6 hours. We chose a 2-hour tour as we’re exploring Montenegro as a family and felt a 4 or 6-hour trip would be too long but one hour is not long enough.

THE TOUR WE DID IS LINKED HERE

This decision was great, we got to see the beauty of the lake, the boys (aged 4 and 1) loved the ride and it included a glass of wine so everyone was a winner!

WHERE TO STAY TO EXPLORE LAKE SKADAR

Virpazar is the tiny (but still the largest) town that borders the lake. This is also the town all the boat tours depart from. If you stay right in the centre, you’ll be able to walk to the lake, anywhere else you’ll need to drive as it’s a hill on a main road.

THE BEST BOAT TOUR ON LAKE SKADAR, MONTENEGRO

Tickets: we booked our tour online via the link here. Tickets were just £13/ €15 for adults and the kids were free. This is an absolute bargain price especially as it includes a glass of wine! You also need to pay an entrance fee to the National Park, this is €5 for each adult and is given in cash at the start of the tour.

Parking: there is free parking available in Virpazar however it does get busy so allow extra time.

What to Bring: as usual, you should bring whatever drinks and snacks, you and your kids need. Binoculars are also a good idea as there are lots of birds, including pelicans you might see. I got these binoculars for Freddie (age 4) and those and his camera kept him entertained throughout the experience.

It can get windy when you’re out on the lake so I’d also recommend a jumper or jacket, especially for little ones.

What to Expect: you’ll depart from Virpazar in a traditional wooden boat, sailing out onto the lake. You’ll see the most beautiful, scenic, mountain views. Pass an old fortress and through a huge sea of beautiful lilypads. Unfortunately, they hadn’t quite bloomed yet but imagine this all golden with the beautiful flowers. The guide also pauses to tell you interesting facts about the area.

IS THE TOUR SUITABLE FOR KIDS?

Absolutely! Freddie was overjoyed when the captain asked if he wanted to drive the boat! It was one of the highlights of the trip and both boys loved sitting on the front of the boat.

Thank you for reading our guide about the best boat tour on Lake Skadar. I hope you add it to your Montenegro itinerary.
