Is Saint-Valery-sur-Somme Worth Visiting?
Saint-Valery-sur-Somme is a charming little town with a lot of character, and if you’re in the Bay of Somme area, it’s absolutely worth a stop. Its medieval streets, riverside views, and quaint cafés make it a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll or a relaxed lunch. Walking along the quays and exploring the old town, you can easily spend a few hours soaking up the atmosphere and enjoying the scenery.
That said, I wouldn’t necessarily plan a trip to Saint-Valery-sur-Somme as a standalone destination. It’s small, and while lovely, in my opinion, it works best as part of a day trip or while exploring the broader Somme Bay region. We visited Saint-Valery-sur-Somme as a day trip from the luxury Yelloh! Village campsite, which is just a short drive away.

Firstly, there is a spacious, free car park, Parking du canal à l’entrée de Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, which is approximately a 30-minute walk from the main town. It is a scenic walk along the river and is also a popular route for cyclists.

Things to do in Saint-Valery-sur-Somme
As I mentioned, it is a small town, but you’ll find enough to do to pass a day! One of the best ways to explore is simply wandering through the streets of the old town. You’ll discover charming half-timbered houses, quaint shops, and narrow alleys that are perfect for a relaxed walk.
For stunning views, head down to the quays along the River Somme. From here, you can watch boats drifting along the river or enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the bay.
The Bay of Somme railway train runs through Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, as well as neighbouring towns between Le Crotoy and Cayeux-sur-Mer. We saw the train when we visited and planned to return to ride on it, but it was fully booked and then closed for the season. So, book tickets online in advance to avoid disappointment. Adult tickets start from €10 for adults and €7 for children.
Food lovers will also enjoy discovering local cafés and restaurants that you will see throughout the town.
