Where to Stay During Your First Time in NYC

If it’s your first time visit to NYC, staying somewhere central makes exploring so much easier. Midtown Manhattan is ideal for first-timers — close to Times Square, Central Park, and major subway lines. Here are some great hotel options for every budget:

Budget ($)

Pod 39 – Compact but stylish rooms with a rooftop bar and fantastic Midtown location near Grand Central. Perfect for travellers who want comfort and convenience without the high price tag.

Mid Range ($$)

Hilton Club The Quinn – a stylish hotel in a great location and amazing reviews!

Luxury ($$$)

The Plaza – New York’s most iconic luxury hotel. With incredible views and complete attention to detail.

The Langham – Located on 5th Avenue, with spacious rooms, sweeping city views, and five-star service right in the heart of Manhattan.

A Perfect 5 Days in New York Itinerary for Your First-Time Visit

Below, I will go into detail about how to spend each of the 5 days on this first-time NYC itinerary. I’ve grouped the attractions that are close together to make exploring easier! I’ve included a map of each day; some of these days don’t look like much time or many steps, but once you factor in looking around all the attractions, it will be longer than you think!

You can also do these days in any order!

Day 1 in NYC – Midtown Manhattan

The first day of this 5 day New York itinerary takes you through the heart of NYC, Midtown Manhattan, which includes many of New York’s most iconic attractions.

SUMMIT One Vanderbilt

Start your day at The Summit. This is one of New York’s coolest observation decks with incredible views of Manhattan. This was my kids’ favourite and we came here more than once!

THE VIEW AND THE MIRROR BALL ROOM AT SUMMIT ONE VANDERBUILT

Note: There are 5 skyscrapers with observation decks in NYC. You may not want to go up all of these, and which one (or two) is best will be personal preference. I have visited them all and gone into detail in my guide, linked here: Which NYC Observation Deck should you visit?

Grand Central Terminal

Next, visit Grand Central Terminal. It’s honestly the most beautiful station, the architecture inside and out is just stunning! Make sure to look up at the amazing consolation ceiling. There is a whispering gallery outside the Oyster Bar; if you stand on opposite sides and whisper into the wall, you can hear it from the other side.

If you need a morning coffee, downstairs, on the level below the concourse, you’ll find lots of options.

If you’re a Gossip Girl fan, you’ll recognise Grand Central as the place where Serena is first spotted. The Campbell is also in Grand Central. This was the bar used to film the scandalous scene, featuring Serena and Nate at the Shephard wedding.

The New York Public Library

Just a short walk from Grand Central Terminal is the New York Public Library. This is another iconic NYC building you need to see. It is stunning to see from the outside, but not everyone knows you can also go inside, and it’s free to visit!

Inside is a permanent exhibition featuring the original Winnie the Pooh teddy that inspired AA Milne’s stories. This exhibition is also free to visit, and no tickets are required.

OUTSIDE THE NYPL AND THE WINNIE THE POOH EXHIBITION INSIDE

Bryant Park

Located around the corner from The New York Public Library is Bryant Park. This is a lovely little park lined with cafes and views of the Empire State Building, making it the perfect lunch spot. I liked Le Pain Quotidien or Breads Bakery; there’s also a Whole Foods across the road if you want to get food to go.

There is always a lot going on in Bryant Park; they often have performers in the summer, and in winter, it is transformed into a winter village with a Christmas market and ice skating rink.

Visit Macy’s Department Store

If you like shopping, you won’t want to miss Macy’s! It is the largest department store in the USA, selling everything you could need! There are also lots of other shops in this area, some others to check out are Target, Old Navy and The Banana Republic Factory Store.

230 Fifth Rooftop Bar

After all that shopping, you’ll likely be ready for a drink (and possibly food!) The rooftop bar, 230 Fifth, has incredible views of the Empire State Building and a delicious menu. Happy hour is from 12-4 pm. They have indoor and outdoor seating and are family-friendly (although no children after 7 pm on weekends).

The Empire State Building

Of course, no trip to NYC would be complete without seeing the Empire State Building. It is possibly the most iconic of all New York’s buildings. If it is your first time in NYC, you’ll likely want to go up this skyscraper!

Two skyscrapers in a day may be too much. Personally, I always think the view from the most iconic building is not the best, as you can’t see the most iconic building from it. I already mentioned my post, Which NYC Observation Deck should you visit? You should read this to decide what is best for you!

DAY 2 in NYC – Rockefeller Centre, Central Park and Museum Mile

Top of the Rock

Assuming you’re staying in midtown Manhattan’s Times Square area, Rockefeller Centre is very close by. This is a great area to explore and is, of course, home to the iconic Rockefeller building and Top of the Rock. This is my favourite of all the NYC observation decks.

Fifth Avenue

I would highly recommend walking up Fifth Avenue to get to Central Park. This street is packed with luxury stores; even if you don’t have the budget to shop there, you can enjoy the extravagant window displays. This will bring you to The Plaza Hotel, one of the most iconic hotels in New York!

Central Park

Central Park is my favourite place in all of New York. It is huge and beautiful, and you can easily spend a full day exploring here. If you cross the road from the Plaza, you can enter the bottom of the park. Walk past The Pond, pausing to see the view from The Gapstow Bridge, then make sure to walk down The Mall to the Bethesda Terrace and Fountain; it is breathtaking.

There are two cafes near the Terrace. The Lobe Boathouse and Le Pain Quotidien are both great options.

Continue through the park towards the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

CENTRAL PARK IN THE SPRING AND WINTER

Museum Mile

Museum Mile is the mile of Fifth Avenue from The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Museum of the City of New York.

As the name suggests, there are lots of museums here. The most visited being The Met, followed by the Guggenheim and the Smithsonian. Even if you dont go inside The Met, you should still see it from the outside!

If you have time and energy, walking around the Central Park Reservoir is also a lovely activity.

THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART & THE GUGGENHEIM

Alternative Afternoon Option

Instead of Museum Mile on the Upper East Side, you could visit the Upper West Side. Here you’ll find the American Museum of Natural History, which is another really popular museum, especially for families.

See a Broadway Show

A show on Broadway is another iconic activity to add to your 5 days in New York itinerary. There are so many options to choose from, so there should be something for everyone.

Personally, I liked Tina Turner: The Musical and Moulin Rouge. For families, The Lion King, Aladdin and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child are all great options.

DAY 3 – Chelsea & Greenwich Village

Hudson Yards and The Vessel

Start day 3 of your 5 days in New York itinerary at Hudson Yards, just outside the Hudson Yards shopping mall, is The Vessel. It is a pretty cool structure and definitely worth seeing. It was closed the whole time I lived in NYC, but it has reopened now.

Hudson Yards Mall is another shopping opportunity! There are also plenty of food places inside.

THE VESSEL & INSIDE HUDSON YARDS MALL AT CHRISTMAS

The Edge

The Edge is another of NYC’s observation decks. The entrance to it is located on the upper level of the mall.

This was actually my least favourite of the NYC Viewing platforms, but lots of people love it. So you can choose for yourself which skyscrapers to visit.

BOOK: TICKETS FOR THE EDGE HERE

THE VIEW FROM THE EDGE & A FLORAL DISPLAY INSIDE DURING FALL

The High Line

As you come out of Hudson Yards, you can walk straight onto The High Line. This is a disused railway track that has been transformed into an elevated park. There is a lot of art and sculptures along the trail, which are changed regularly, so it’s very interesting.

It should take you about 30 – 40 minutes to walk the full length of the High Line, but there are entrances/exits along the route.

WALKING THE HIGH LINE IN NYC

Chelsea Market or Pier 57

Next, I would choose between Chelsea Market and Pier 57. You might be able to squeeze in both, depending on your pace. Either have a few different food options for lunch. Chelsea Market is cool and edgy, while Pier 57 is a hidden gem, with a secret rooftop and amazing views of downtown Manhattan.

Little Island

After lunch, visit Little Island Park. This is a fairly new park located on the Hudson River. It’s a really unique place, and if you follow the path to the top of the hill, you’ll see amazing views!

VIEW OF LITTLE ISLAND FROM PIER 57 & VIEW FROM THE TOP OF LITTLE ISLAND

Greenwich Village

Greenwich Village is a beautiful area of NYC to wander.

If you’re a fan of Friends or Sex and the City (or both), you can see both the Friends apartment block and Carrie Bradshaw’s apartment in this area!

Addresses: Friends – 90 Bedford Street and SATC – 66 Perry Street.

THE FRIENDS APARTMENT BUILDING & CARRIE BRADSHAW’S APARTMENT

Little Italy

Finish your day with dinner in Little Italy; there are so many delicious restaurants to choose from!

DAY 4 – Downtown Manhattan

On day 4 of this 5-day New York itinerary, explore Downtown Manhattan and the Financial District.

World Trade Centre

Start the day at The World Trade Centre. Visit the Memorial Fountains in memory of all people who lost their lives in the Twin Towers attack. There is also a 9/11 Museum, which you can visit. I found this very emotional and personally, wouldn’t visit here with young children.

One World Observatory

One World Observatory (also known as the Freedom Tower) is the tallest building in New York and has another observation deck with excellent views.

BOOK: ONE WORLD OBSERVATORY TICKETS HERE.

The Oculus

The Oculus is a really cool, unique building to look at from both the outside and inside.

Inside are mainly shops and cafes.

VIEW OF THE FREEDOM TOWER AND STATUE OF LIBERTY

Century 21

Century 21 is self-proclaimed New York’s best-kept secret. It’s a discount department store, along the lines of TJ Maxx (or TK Maxx if you’re from the UK).

It is not my favourite place, but if you’re looking to pick up some bargains, it is a good option.

Wall Street

Of course, Wall Street is a must-visit place that will be on everyone’s NYC itinerary. There’s not too much to see here, but it’s good to tick it off the bucket list!

Statue of Liberty

Visiting the Statue of Liberty is one thing that remains on my NYC bucket list. It was closed for renovations when we lived in NYC, and I was too slow to get tickets when it reopened.

Lady Liberty is a true New York icon and would be incredible to visit.

BOOK: STATUE OF LIBERTY TICKETS HERE.

NOTE: Please book tickets through a reputable source. I have heard many stories about tourists getting scammed by people on the street selling fake Statue of Liberty cruises.

Staten Island Ferry

If you don’t visit the Statue of Liberty, an alternative option is to ride the Staten Island ferry. This is a free ferry that takes you from downtown Manhattan to Staten Island and back. It is designed as a commuter ferry but offers good views of the Statue of Liberty.

RIDING THE STATEN ISLAND FERRY

Battery Park & The Sea Glass Carousel

Battery Park is a small park located at the lowest point of Downtown Manhattan. There is a great playground if you’re visiting NYC with kids. They will also love the Sea Glass Carousel, located in the park. This is a completely unique indoor carousel where you ride on multicoloursed glass sea creatures.

BATTERY PARK PLAYGROUND & THE SEAGLASS CAROUSEL

South Street Seaport

South Street Seaport is a lovely little area to walk around and stop for food.

Pier 17 is also cute and a perfect place to take photos of the Brooklyn Bridge.

DAY 5 – The Final Day of Your 5 Days in New York Itinerary

This day in New York takes you across the Brooklyn Bridge to DUMBO and it is one of my favourite days out!

The Brooklyn Bridge

Start your day by walking the Brooklyn Bridge. This is one of the most iconic bridges in the World, and it gets very crowded, so I suggest you start early!

The bridge itself takes about 30-45 minutes to walk across. Don’t forget to stop and look back at the Manhattan Skyline.

THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE

DUMBO Manhattan Bridge View

As you exit the Brooklyn Bridge into DUMBO, make sure to pass the viewpoint called the Manhattan Bridge view. At this spot, the Empire State Building is perfectly framed by the Manhattan Bridge and is a really popular photo opportunity.

Also, you might be ready for a coffee and a sweet treat. I recommend Dawn til Dusk Coffee shop!

Pebble Beach

As you come around to Pebble Beach, you’ll see the most amazing views of the Manhattan skyline. This is another really great photo spot.

DUMBO MANHATTAN BRIDGE VIEWPOINT & ENJOYING PEBBLE BEACH

Time Out Market

Time Out Market in DUMBO is really popular. It’s a great place to get lunch as they have lots of different options.

Jane’s Carousel

Finally, grownups and children alike love Jane’s Carousel; this traditional carousel costs just $3 per ride, and adults can accompany small children for free.

JANE’S CAROUSEL & THE VIEW FROM THE MANHATTAN BRIDGE

You can either walk back, across either the Brooklyn or Manhattan Bridge, or take the NYC Ferry, either to Wall Street or to the East 34th Street stop if you’re heading back to the Times Square area.
