When is the Best Time to Visit New York City with Kids
If you’re still planning your New York family itinerary, you may be wondering when the best time to visit NYC with kids is. While I honestly believe there is no bad time of year to be in New York City, there are a couple of factors to keep in mind.
July and August in New York are incredibly humid. This makes exploring hard work, it is also the busiest time for tourists due to it being school holidays.
February (and sometimes January) can be incredibly cold. It is the cheapest time to visit NYC, but make sure to wrap up warm!
If I could pick anytime, I’d choose spring as the weather should be warm but not too hot and cherry blossoms in Central Park are incredible. Fall (autumn) is also a good time to go.
Finally, Christmas in New York with kids is an incredibly magical time; however, it can be even more crowded than normal.

CHRISTMAS IN NEW YORK WITH KIDS
Is 4 days Enough to see New York with Kids?
Another question I often get asked is how many days you’ll need for your New York trip with family. How many days in NYC with kids really depends on your travel style and what you’d like to see, this is quite a fast-paced itinerary, but for most families, 4 days in New York with kids is enough time to see most of the major attractions and get a good feel for this amazing city.
While you won’t be able to see all of New York City in 4 days, it gives you enough time to explore iconic landmarks such as the Empire State Building and Central Park, while also enjoying some relaxed downtime at playgrounds or family-friendly museums.
My 4 days in New York with kids itinerary will help you make the most of your time in NYC. If you have the budget to stay a little longer, you’ll be able to find plenty more family-friendly things to do and maybe even explore some of these NYC hidden gems!

Best Family-Friendly Areas to Stay in NYC
The most popular place to stay in New York is the Midtown/ Times Square area. New Yorkers will tell you that Times Square is massively overrated. However, this is a good area to stay in as you’ll be central. It’s easy to get around the city from here (I’ve written a guide with more information on how to get around NYC with kids here). If you stay out of the centre, you’ll spend a lot of time travelling and especially with kids, it’s just not worth it!
Many visitors also like Greenwich Village and Chelsea; however, these areas don’t have as many accessible transport options, meaning you might end up carrying your stroller (pushchair) up and down lots of steps for the subway.
New York Hotels for Families
Hilton Garden Inn New York Central Park $ – A solid, budget pick for families who want easy access to kid-friendly attractions like Central Park, Times Square, Broadway musicals and Rockefeller Centre without breaking the bank. Plus, you’re just a short walk from subway lines that connect you to all of Manhattan’s highlights. Rooms can include two beds (and cots on request).
Millennium Hotel Broadway Times Square $$ – Right in the heart of Times Square and the Theatre District, this is an easy base for families who want to be in the heart of the Big Apple. Perfect for a first-time NYC family trip.
The Lotte New York Palace $$$ – If you’re looking to splurge, this iconic Midtown hotel combines spacious rooms and luxury service with thoughtful family perks — kids under 12 stay free in parents’ rooms, and they even offer packages like “Little Royals” designed with children in mind. Its prime location near Rockefeller Centre, Fifth Avenue, and Central Park makes it easy to balance sightseeing and downtime.

Prepping Your Kids for NYC
Big cities can be overwhelming for kids. I find talking about the destination in the weeks leading up to the trip really helps and makes them excited for their visit.
Reading books about NYC is a great way to get them excited about the trip. Some of our favourites include: Jane Foster’s New York and Busy New York, which are great for toddlers or younger children. If you are visiting New York City with a toddler, read this guide next!
Or Pop-up New York and A Walk in New York are great for older kids.
Overview of How to Spend 4 Days in NYC with Kids
Below, I’m going to share how to spend an amazing 4 days in New York with kids. Read on for where to go, what to see and family-friendly places to eat. Plus tips on enjoying NYC’s major attractions with children.
An Outline of your perfect 4 day New York City Itinerary:
- Day 1 – Central Park and Uptown New York (+which iconic NYC museum is best for your family)
- Day 2 – Skyscrapers and Exploring Midtown Manhattan (including shopping, Bryant Park, the New York Public Library, Grand Central and Times Square)
- Day 3 – Lower Manhattan (Chelsea, the High Line & Little Island)
- Day 4 – Downtown Manhattan (the Brooklyn Bridge, 9/11 Memorial and Wall Street)
In some places, for example, museums in the Upper East Side, I will tell you the options, and you can pick the best one for you, allowing you to build the perfect New York with kids itinerary for your family.

Day 1 in New York with Kids: Central Park and the Upper East & West Sides
I loved taking visitors to Central Park on their first day in NYC with kids. It’s great to get outside and have some fresh air after travelling. It’s also a fantastic place for kids and adults to all enjoy.
I would suggest starting on the Upper East Side, then going to Central Park and finally, heading to the Upper West Side. There are a lot of museum options here; trying to do everything will be overwhelming, so I’ll give you the options, and you can pick which is best for your family.
Things to Do on the Upper East Side with Kids in NYC
Start your day early and head to the Upper East Side. It is well known for the Museum Mile. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Guggenheim and The Museum of the City of New York, to name just a few. The Met being the most iconic, the architecture of the MET is just beautiful, and I’d highly recommend you see it even if you choose not to go inside.
Kid Tip: Recently, The Met opened a Children’s Studio, which is aimed at ages 11 and under and is really fun. Unfortunately, you can’t book this in advance; you have to turn up and put your name on a waitlist. You’re also limited to half an hour in there. But it is free, and you pay for the rest of the museum.
Tickets for The Met cost $30, with children under 12 visiting for free. Book directly on The Met’s Website for the best price.
The Guggenheim Museum is in an incredibly beautiful building, but I didnt love it for little kids, there’s not as much to see there as The Met.

INSIDE THE GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM
We enjoyed the Museum of the City of New York, and they had a kids’ activity you could do as you look around. It is also a beautiful building; however, it’s located quite far north in Manhattan, so it may not be worth the extra travel time if you’re on a tight schedule.
My advice here is to pick one of these museums, depending on which your family will like most. Alternatively, just see The Met from the outside, then venture into the Park.

OUTSIDE THE MET & THE 81ST STREET STUDIO
Central Park with Kids: Our Favourite Place to Explore
Central Park really was our happy place, and we spent many hours there. I’ve written a full guide to Central Park, but I’ll summarise the key areas in this post.
If you’re coming from the East side, stop at a playground to let the kids burn some energy. Central Park has 21 playgrounds, so you’re spoilt for choice. On the left of The Met is Ruth and Arthur Smadbeck-Heckscher East Playground, which is great for small children or on the other side, you have The Ancient Playground, which is better for older kids.
Walk down through the park, passing the Alice in Wonderland and the Hans Christian Anderson Statues. Kids are allowed to climb on both of these, and they will love to do so!

THE ALICE IN WONDERLAND STATUE IN CENTRAL PARK
Kid Tip: kids (and dads) often get hungry, there are various carts selling drinks, pretzels and hot dogs. They’re not the most delicious or nutritious, but they are iconic New York and a budget-friendly snack option. There’s also a cafe opposite the Hans Christian Andersen statue.
Continue on to the Bethesda Terrace and Central Park Mall. It is so beautiful, and you’ll definitely want to go there.
Kid Tip: The terrace has a lot of steps; however, it is possible to get around with a stroller (pushchair) by walking the long way around.
Here, you can decide. Do you want to see more of the Park or check out the Upper West Side?
If you want to continue in the park, go on to The Pond, Umpire Rock and Heckscher Playground. If you’re going to the Upper West Side, cross the Bow Bridge and stroll through the Ramble.

VIEWS FROM UMPIRE ROCK IN CENTRAL PARK
What to Do on the Upper West Side with Kids
The main attraction on the Upper West Side is the Museum of Natural History. Unfortunately, it’s not free like many of the other history museums, but it certainly is better than the London one. This was our 4-year-olds’ favourite, and we went here a lot.
You’re probably getting hungry. Our favourite kid-friendly restaurant on the Upper West Side was Jacobs Pickle. We also liked Fred’s.

Final Advice for Day 1 in New York with Kids
Personally, I would pick one museum to visit. This is a tough choice. The Museum of Natural History is the best one for kids. It’s also much better than the version in London. However, the Met is iconic, and you won’t find it anywhere else. If you’re going to do The Met, try to book into the kids’ play space!

THE AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY
Day 2 in New York with Kids: Exploring Midtown Manhattan
Day 2 of your 4 days in New York with kids itinerary, is in midtown Manhattan. Midtown gets extremely busy, so start early if possible.
Best NYC Skyscrapers to Visit with Kids
When in New York, you’ll definitely want to visit one of the skyscrapers, and I’d recommend starting your day with one of these while everyone is feeling fresh! Top of the Rock was my personal favourite, but Summit One Vanderbilt is the best for kids as it has fun mirrors and a room of giant balloon-type balls they can play with! Our full NYC Skyscraper guide is linked here. This will help you decide the right one for you and your family!
Bills Bar & Burger is right by Rockefeller and a great American place to get lunch (depending on your timings).
Shops in Midtown Manhattan Kids Will Love
Next, check out some of NYC’s children’s stores. Kids will just love FAO Schwarz. It’s a good place to pick up some non-tacky NYC souvenirs. The Lego Store is also popular. You also have the FDNY Fire Zone. The fire department store, but you can sit in a life-size fire engine. My boys absolutely loved coming in here!

PLAYING IN THE LEGO STORE
I’m a boy mum, but I hear good things about American Girl Place if your kids like dolls. All these are located in Rockefeller Plaza.

SHOPPING: FAO SCHWARZ & FDNY NYC STORE
Bryant Park: a fun place to relax with Kids
Head to Bryant Park, for lunch or a coffee stop. There are plenty of tables and chairs you can stop at. For coffee, we liked Le Pain Quotidien or Breads Bakery. Whole Foods is a good place to grab a to-go lunch. Or if you need a sweet treat, try Waffles and Dingles.
Kid Tip: There is no playground, but there is a children’s area with books, magnetic tiles and other things kids will love. There’s also a small carousel.

BRYANT PARK: THE CAROUSEL AND KIDS CORNER
Is the New York Public Library Worth Visiting with Kids?
Absolutely!! Walk just around the corner from Bryant Park to the New York Public Library. The building is so beautiful and really a must-see. It’s also beautiful inside, and entry is free.
The Library also has an exhibition showing the original Winnie-the-Pooh teddy bear, which and fan of the AA Milne stories will love to see.
Kid Tip: The accessible entrance is on the right side of the building. You can’t take strollers into the exhibition, but you can leave them in the cloakroom.

THE NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY: WINNIE THE POOH EXHIBITION & THE LIONS OUTSIDE
Visiting Grand Central Station
Less than a 10-minute walk from the library. Grand Central Station is so beautiful, don’t forget to look up at the amazing constellation print ceiling. You can also visit the Whispering Gallery (located near the Oyster Bar) and hear each other whisper from across the room.
Kid Tip: When my son was aged 2-3, he liked to go to the platforms and see the trains. He’d name them after Thomas the Tank characters.

GRAND CENTRAL TERMINAL
Tips for Seeing Times Square with Kids
I mentioned earlier that Times Square is overrated. It is. But it would also be a shame to miss out on it while you’re in NYC. It’s really best at night. Depending on the age of your kids, you might want to see a Broadway show; most are for age 5+. The Lion King is an all-time favourite and Aladdin is also popular with children. If you have older children, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has amazing special effects.
Or if you’re visiting New York at Christmas, the Rockettes is an amazing show to see!

Day 3 in New York with Kids: Chelsea, the High Line & Little Island
Day 3 of our 4 days in New York with kids itinerary takes you to some more NYC highlights and includes some great free activities that are fun for the whole family.
Visiting Hudson Yards with Kids
Start day 3 at Hudson Yards. The Edge Observation Deck wasn’t a personal favourite, but if you would like to do this one, it is located here, so it’s the perfect time! You’ll find places to get breakfast here. Just outside is The Vessel. Unfortunately, it has been closed for a while, but it is still a cool building to see.

VIEW FROM THE EDGE NYC
Kid Tip: My son was overjoyed when his Nana treated him to candy from the iconic Dylan’s Candy Shop in Hudson Yards.

DYLAN’S CANDY SHOP AT HUDSON YARDS
Walking the High Line with Kids: A Fun & Free NYC Activity
This is an old elevated railway track, which was once used for freight trains. Rather than demolishing it, it was transformed into a walkable path, surrounded by plants and works of art.
Kids and adults will both love walking the High Line, and even better, it’s a free activity!

WALKING THE HIGHLINE
Enjoy Rooftop Views at Pier 57
One of New York’s hidden gems. There are lots of options for lunch here (or in Chelsea Market across the street). The reason I recommend Pier 57 is because of its amazing rooftop view. You can see Little Island and downtown Manhattan from the rooftop garden.

VIEW FROM PIER 57
Exploring Little Island NYC with Kids
Another free thing to do, which is perfect to add to your New York trip with family itinerary!
This is a relatively new park for NYC (opened in 2021) and is a unique design. This is another place that kids and parents can both enjoy. There are some interactive elements for kids, such as wheels to spin and musical instruments they can play. You’ll also get great views of downtown Manhattan.
It does get pretty windy, sometimes we didn’t make it to the top as it was just too cold!

LITTLE ISLAND NYC
Optional Stops for TV Fans in NYC
If you’re not too tired by this point. The buildings used for the exterior shots for Carrie Bradshaw’s apartment (64 Perry Street) and the Friends apartment (90 Bedford Street) are only around a 20-minute walk away.
I don’t think either of these is a must-do unless you’re a big fan of either of the shows!
Day 4 in New York with Kids: Brooklyn Bridge, DUMBO & Lower Manhattan
You are on the final day of these 4 days in New York with kids’ itinerary, and it’s another amazing one.
Depending on how exhausted you are, you could start your day in DUMBO, Brooklyn and walk back along the Brooklyn Bridge. DUMBO is very charming, and you could easily spend the full day here.
Sometimes, trying to do too much with little kids is just not worth it, so I’ll leave it up to you!

VIEW OF THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE FROM DUMBO
Walking the Brooklyn Bridge with Kids
The Brooklyn Bridge is iconic in NYC and is a lovely walk with great views. It also gets very crowded. So, I would suggest going here early in the day.
Kid Tip: If walking the bridge is too much, you can just go partway and then head back to Manhattan.
If you choose not to walk the Brooklyn Bridge, you can get a good view of it from Pier 17.

WALKING THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE
Walk Down Wall Street
From the Brooklyn Bridge, walk through Seaport to Wall Street. Seaport is a beautiful little area, and Wall Street is a must-see in NYC.
Enjoy the Battery with Kids
From Wall Street, head towards The Battery. There is a big playground that kids will love to stop at.

THE PLAYGROUND IN BATTERY PARK
There is also the beautiful Sea Glass Carousel. This is unlike any other carousel I’ve ever seen; little kids will also love this.

THE SEAGLASS CAROUSEL IN THE BATTERY
Visit the Statue of Liberty
Visiting the Statue of Liberty is the one NYC activity we didn’t get to do. It was closed most of the time we were there, but it is one of the most iconic things to do in New York City.
Make sure you book your tickets in advance and from a reputable source. It is a common scam for people to sell fake tickets around the point where the cruises depart.
Children can visit the Statue of Liberty; however, to climb the crown, they must be able to climb the 160+ stairs on their own and be over 107cm tall.
BOOK: STATUE OF LIBERTY TICKETS HERE.
Relax on the Staten Island Ferry
If you decide not to visit the Statue of Liberty, taking the ferry to Staten Island and back is a good alternative. From the ferry, you’ll get the best free views of the Statue of Liberty.
It is also nice to sit and relax, while looking out of the window after all the walking you’ve done in NYC.

RIDING THE STATEN ISLAND FERRY
One World Trade Memorial
Our final stop on this 4 days in New York with kids itinerary is the One World Trade Memorial. Visit the 9/11 Memorial site and One World Observatory. If you’d like to visit this observation deck, it is the perfect way to end your trip and seeing the sunset would be incredible. The memorial is pretty humbling, and the 9/11 museum is pretty heartbreaking. However, these are a key piece of New York’s history.
Kid Tip: We didn’t go into too much detail about the Twin Towers tragedy with our kids, or take them to the museum. They’re too young to understand it properly.
Kid Tip 2: The Oculus shopping mall is located close by and has good restrooms and food if you need it. It’s also a cool building to look at!
